So much literature on narcissism is all done al-anon style (e.g. for the benefit of someone in a relationship with the narcissist).

HOWEVER, there is NOTHING out there about the treatment of the narcissist himself! Most sources state treatment for N is to "leave the N" (which of course is not treatment for N, it's treatment for the N's loved ones). What about the N? How can we leave ourselves? How do we develop compassion and stop the obessive-compulsive cycle of attempting to gain attn from others?

Is the Narcissist like the Alcoholic of the 1920s - doomed to be self-absorbed and die that way with no current cure in sight?

So does using a blog to quote an article that quotes an idea in your book count as narcissistic? :-)

P.S.

Sadly, while discussing your book with a friend, I discovered that he had no context for the title of your book, having never heard of Narcissus

Just finished reading Narcissism Epidemic and thank you for suggesting that, at least in the area of narcissistic adults and children, my perceptions may be reasonably accurate. I did find some of your examples holding collective cultures up as positive examples to counter narcissism somewhat puzzling, but overall much appreciated your work.

As for competing grandparents, it seems to me that at least part of it for far too many parents and grandparents is the competitive need to be seen as "the best" - the most attentive and involved parent, the most giving grandparent.

I was actualy beginning to think that I simply disliked children (despite raising two adopted children myself and being a caring, albeit physically distant, grandparent to three). But I came to realize that it was only out-of-control, self-absorbed, rowdy and rude children I dislike (and that intensely). Thank you.
