Dating changes and the recession

I have been watching for changes to relationship values brought on by the recession. Many people I have talked have noticed individuals being brought closer together by the recession (less narcissism – more connection). On the other hand, there is a good deal of research showing the damage that financial difficulties do to relationships, especially marriage. What I didn’t expect was a return to the classic “dating marketplace” where youth and beauty are exchanged for wealth. This financial solution, mixed with the Internet, has produced sites like Established Men “where beautiful girls and successful men meet.” The ABC Nightline profile is very interesting.

One of my students suggested I play this in my class on narcissism and relationships. In my opinion, it sounds straight out of the DSM – almost to the point of being planned. I don’t know if it is real or not, of course.
